Dental insurance is a type of health insurance that covers the cost of dental visits and procedures. It is similar to other types of insurance in that it pools money from the insured over time, which is then used in certain events. In this case, dental health issues.
Dental insurance is offered in a wide range of coverage options. Two options for dental insurance plans are DHMO and PPO. Dental Health Maintenance Organization (DHMO) is a capitation plan. Under this plan, the dentist is paid per person instead of the treatment provided.
DHMO plans are generally cheaper but require patients to be referred by their primary care dentist. Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO) covers dental work done by designated PPO dentists only. PPO plans allow you to choose any dentist at lower costs if they participate in the insurance company’s PPO network.
